Obituary for Betty M. Treuting

Betty Merriken Treuting was the middle child, with two older brothers, and two younger sisters. She grew up in the Pikesville area of Baltimore, and spent part of each summer in a little house, down on the Eastern shore in Tolchester, MD. They could look across the Chesapeake Bay and see Baltimore from there. She enjoyed water activities, Boating, swimming, water skiing, and crabbing. Even into her forties, she was determined to learn how to slalom ski, trying over and over to get up on one ski, till she succeeded. She met Charles Treuting, who was from Catonsville, on the Eastern shore, and their marriage was one that stood the test of time. They’d been married a few weeks shy of 69 years when he passed away.
Betty graduated from University of Montevella with a teaching degree and taught Phys Ed at Milford Mill high school and Sudbrook Jr High when it first opened. She retired from teaching to become a stay at home mother when her youngest daughter came along. Her best friend, Jane Saxon, lived on Weems Creek in Annapolis and she and her family spent a lot of time there in the summers, enjoying all the activities waterfront living offers.
Betty was also a very talented seamstress. While her girls were growing up she did clothing alterations and mending for many folks. When her oldest daughter Pam was ready to go off to college, Betty went to work in a drapery company, learning what was necessary to create curtains and other window coverings. Once she had it down, she branched out on her own, subcontracting with several interior decorating. At times the family room was an assembly line, with daughters helping to iron, pin, and sew. At one time there was a 4x8 work table, two sewing machines and a serger going. She blessed many folks with beautiful window coverings for their homes.
When the need for college funding was over, she slowed down with the draperies and turned to making crafts. Tote bags, Potholders, Casserole carriers, you name it, she could sew it. Even after moving to a retirement village, she still continued to sew for others.
When she wasn’t crafting, Betty enjoyed swimming and sunning in the summer, was on the church bowling league for a while and participated in the United Methodist Women’s group. She also had some beautiful flower gardens. Once they moved to Augsburg village, Betty and Charles enjoyed going for walks around the property there.
When Charles’ health started declining Betty was a devoted nurse to him, he said she treated him like a king. All their married life they could be caught “kissing in the kitchen”, a testament to their love for one another till his death.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Linda Treuting Maxwell, nephew Jonathan Charles Boblitz, and sisters Doris Edwards and Vida Wheeler. Her daughter Pam Treuting Boblitz preceded her in death in 1989, also her two brothers Thomas Merriken and Richard Merriken.
