Obituary for Eva F. Anderson (Frantz)
Eva Frantz Anderson, retired Baltimore Symphony Orchestra cellist and keyboardist, music teacher at Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, and church organist, died of COVID-19 April 13, 2020 at Sun Valley Assisted Living in Westminster, Maryland, where she was a resident. She was 89.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, she was the daughter of Luther Frantz, a civil engineer, and his wife, Eva Ness, a private piano teacher. Her brother, Luther Frantz, was a statistician for the Maryland Department of Health.
She was a 1948 Graduate of Baltimore’s Eastern High School. She completed her education at Peabody Institute. There she earned Teacher’s Certificates in Piano, Harmony, and Violoncello. In 1954, she graduated with a Bachelor of Music Piano and Supplementary Subjects. She earned a Master of Music Violoncello in 1958.
Eva married John Meredith “Andy” Anderson in 1954. He was very supportive and encouraging of her music and career.
One of Eva’s favorite music memories was when the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) performed one of her early compositions, “Go to Sleep My Teddy Bear”. The performance was for her 7th birthday in 1938.
In 1961, Eva auditioned for the BSO. At first she was told there were no openings. A position soon opened and she was invited to fill it. She hesitated accepting the job. Her husband, Andy, talked her into accepting the offer. Eva became the BSO’s newest cellist that year. She soon added keyboard to her role with the Symphony.
Eva performed continuously with the BSO from 1961 until her retirement in 1995. After retiring, she periodically served as a substitute.
A highlight of Eva’s musical career was accompanying Metropolitan Opera Soprano Beverly Sills.
In addition to performing with the BSO, Eva played with the York and Gettysburg Symphonies; in trios and quartets; taught music at Peabody Institute, as well as in her home; and served as church organist, first with Glyndon United Methodist Church in Glydon, Maryland, and then with First Church of Christ, Scientist, Annapolis, Maryland.
Music was Eva’s life. Her home was filled with the sound of music as she practiced for her performances and also when her students came for lessons.
Eva and her husband, Andy, lived in a house on the Bodkin Creek, in Pasadena, Maryland. They were well known for their summertime crab parties with crabs caught fresh from their dock. Annually, they hosted a holiday party in their home in December. That party found an eclectic mix of musicians and artists mixing with Eva’s family, friends and neighbors. She and Andy also enjoyed travel adventures together.
Eva spent her final years as an active resident of Sun Valley Assisted Living in Westminster, Maryland. She was able to bring her music with her to her new home. She had her piano and cello in her room. Her organ was situated in the common room where she performed for her fellow residents and guests. She acted as organist for their church services.
Eva is survived by: her two daughters, Marie, married to Thomas Burnham, and Marty, married to Alex Dunbar; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and dear friend, Marco Warner.
She was predeceased by her husband, Andy, to whom she was married for 52 years.
