Obituary for George Anthony Lahey
On April 30, 2020, Lt. Colonel George Anthony Lahey, loving husband and father of five, and a resident of Acts-Fairhaven Retirement Community, passed away at age 88.
George was born on November 14, 1931 in Sedalia, MO to Edward Andrew and Mae (Murphy) Lahey. Following high school in Champaign, IL and attending the General Motors Institute in Flint, MI, George was drafted into the US Army during the Korean War. George completed OCS and was commissioned as an officer in 1953. He was stationed at various US locations (Fort Meade, MD, Fort Knox, KY, Fort Hood, TX, Fort Belvoir, VA), and overseas in Germany, Vietnam, and Uruguay. George served in the Army for 20 years, retiring in 1972 as a Lt. Colonel with military awards including the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and the Vietnamese Honor Medal.
After retiring, George went to law school at Catholic University in DC and began his second career as an attorney, joining the Maryland Bar in 1976. He was in private practice in Oxon Hill and Hyattsville, and later worked as the assistant and then County Attorney in Carroll County, MD, where he has lived since 1990.
In 1953, George married the love of his life, Dorothy Frances Waghorne, and they celebrated their 67th anniversary in February. George and Dorothy traveled the world together, raised five children, welcomed grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and enjoyed their days together.
George is predeceased by his parents and five siblings and by his son, James Edward. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, his children, Ellen McAvoy (Glenn), Muriel Kneib (Tom), Laura Gallagher (Brett), daughter-in-law, Lana, and Matthew Lahey (Carol), fourteen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, his sister-in-law, Peg Hengesbaugh, and many nieces and nephews.
George will be remembered by all who knew him as a man who was loyal to God, his country, his family, and especially to his beautiful bride and lifelong companion, Dorothy.
A service with military honors will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
