Obituary for Gloria O. Thomas (Ochsenreiter)

On Sunday, December 13, 2020, Gloria Thomas (nee Ochsenreiter), age 99, of Westminster, MD passed away at Bethania Assisted Living, her home of almost 6 years. She was the beloved wife of the late Charles B. Thomas, and mother of Charles B. Thomas, Jr. (Susanna), Catherine C. Moore (Dan), the late Lewis F. Thomas, Gloria Marie Gisriel (Bill) and William J. Thomas (Monica). She is survived by seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by brother Frank B. Ocsenreiter. She was the last of her generation on both her side and her husband’s side.
Gloria was born November 21, 1921, in Washington, DC the daughter of the late Frank B. and Gloria (Ritcher) Ochsenreiter and served in the United States Marine Corps as a Staff Sargent serving as an air traffic controller during WWII. Gloria and Charles raised their family first in SE Washington, and later in Hyattsville, MD. She was a Prince George’s County Crossing Guard for many years and also was a proficient cake decorator having taught cake decorating for many years as well as selling cakes for all occasions, including weddings.
Gloria moved to Westminster in 1989 with her son, Lewis and was an active parishioner at St. John’s Catholic Church serving on many committees, as well as working at the weekly soup kitchen and Christmas Bazaars.
For many years she was a member of the West End Athletic Club and made many friends with the water aerobics group. Gloria was always active and always greeted everyone with a warm smile. She enjoyed traveling with friends to Europe and throughout the United States.
When her son, Lewis, passed away after a long battle with cancer, she moved to Brightview Westminster Ridge for five years and enjoyed the many friendships she made there. After a fall in 2014, she moved to Bethania where she was beloved by the wonderful staff and cared for until her passing.
The Family will receive friends on Monday, December 21, 2020 from 10-11 AM at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, P.A. 1212 West Old Liberty Road Winfield, MD 21784 (Beside South Carroll High School). Where Catholic Prayer service will begin at 11 AM. Service will be livestreamed starting at 10:50 AM.
Social distancing and mask are required at the funeral home.
Interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery
