Obituary for Joan Ann Dankert (Shoop)

Joan A. Dankert, 84, passed away peacefully at home on January 22, 2022 surrounded by her family.

She was predeceased 33 years earlier by her husband of 31 years, Herbert Dankert. She is survived by her 3 children – August (Gus) Dankert, Timothy Dankert and wife Karen, Linda Brown and husband Brad; as well as granddaughter Katie Dankert and fiancé Jonathan Couch, grandson Stephen Dankert and wife Devon, and great-grandson Elijah. Also surviving are niece and nephew Suzanne Holland and Karl Grzena of Cortland, Ohio, along with sister- and brother-in-law Dorothy and Jim Enzinger and their sons Paul and Kurt of Glenview, Illinois. Joan was also predeceased by her sister-in-law Marie Grzena of Fairfax, Virginia.
Joan was the daughter of Clarence F. and Mary Louise Shoop (White) of Baltimore and was raised by her grandmother, Ethel Irene Hoover (“Mama”).

Joan’s husband was an engineer for the B&O Railroad, later known as CSX. Before settling in Eldersburg in 1975, the family also lived in Proctorville, Ohio and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, establishing life-long friendships there. Joan was a bus driver for McDonough School for 38 years. Beloved by hundreds of McDonough students over the years, “Miss Joan” was known to brighten their day with a welcoming smile, holiday treats, and fun Halloween costumes.

An avid animal lover, Joan always had multiple dogs and cats living with her as extended family. Her beloved little dog Leia was by her side to the end. She also cared for her backyard wildlife and will be sorely missed by many neighborhood squirrels, birds, and stray cats. Joan volunteered for many years with Metro Ferals, assisting the veterinary staff as needed with their spay and neuter clinics.

Joan also enjoyed watching her two grandchildren grow up, often hosting them for “Camp Mom-Mom”. She was one of their most faithful fans at their sporting events and made special memories with them for many years.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Metro Ferals in her honor. Checks can be addressed to Metro Ferals and mailed to 5718 Ridge Rd. Mount Airy, MD 21771. Please reference “In memory of Joan Dankert” in the memo line.
