Obituary for Karl C. Petro

Karl “Carmen” Petro of Westminster, Maryland, passed away peacefully Friday, December 4th, 2020, in his home surrounded by family. Carmen was born July 3rd, 1925 in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Joseph DiPietro and Clorinda Varrato DiPietro and was the 9th of ten children.

After completing trade school, Carmen was drafted into the military in October of 1943 and served in the 6th Armored Infantry and saw duty in both Italy and Germany during World War II. Carmen served with honor and dignity earning a Purple Heart for injuries he received when the tank he was directing struck a land mine. After his honorable discharge in 1946 Carmen returned to Maryland where he met, and eventually married his sweetheart in 1947, the late Regina “Jean” Ann Povelaitis.

Carmen is survived by his and Jean’s 4 children, daughter Clorinda Petro Shapiro and her husband Samuel Shapiro of Hackettstown, New Jersey, Karl Petro and his wife Bonnie Petro, of Westminster, Maryland, Michael Petro, of Baltimore, Maryland, and Joseph “Joey” Petro and his wife Vicki Strate Petro, of Queenstown, Maryland. Carmen also leaves behind eight loving grandchildren, Karl Joseph Petro, Gina Francis Petro, Joseph Carmen Petro, Elizabeth Petro Harrison, Alan Jeffery Shapiro, Jason Stuart Shapiro, Kyle Robert Pfeiffer and Callahan “Callie” Paige Pfeiffer, and 3 great grandchildren, Joseph Carmen Petro, Jr., Sophie Elizabeth Harrison and Brianna Elisa Petro. Carmen is also survived by his remaining sibling, his sister Margaret Petro Curreri 101 years old, of Randallstown, Maryland, along with many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

Carmen was a kind, gentle man who, above all else, put family first. A devoted husband, a caring father, loving grandfather and good friend to all who were fortunate enough to know him. Carmen enjoyed golf and an occasional trip to Atlantic City where he loved to help the local economy! But, what he most enjoyed was being surrounded by his adoring family and friends. Carmen was always the star in the room wherever he went!

Carmen will be laid to rest in a private ceremony on Wednesday, December 9, 2020; The family asks that in lieu of flowers contributions be made in the name of Carmen to Carroll Hospice, Inc., 292 Stoner Avenue, Westminster, MD. 21157 https://www.lifebridgehealth.org/CarrollHospice/CarrollHospice.aspx.
