Obituary for Lila Lee
Lila Virginia Joralmon Lee, 95, of Mount Airy, MD passed away suddenly at her home on Saturday, January 11, 2020.
Born in Haverhill, MA on March 23, 1924 to Jack and Doris Joralmon, she later moved to Washington, D.C with her father as a child. She grew up in D.C. with her father and stepmother, Louise, and would go on to graduate from Coolidge High School and Strayer Business School, where upon graduation she began a career in the Government. She worked as a secretary to a Congressman, dealing with legislative related issues and casework, managed new comers to Congress and organized and served as first President of the Women’s Club for the House and Senate. One of the clubs first projects was serving as an employment group for office workers. After raising her family in the Washington metropolitan area she retired to Pawley’s Island, SC with her husband Bob. In 2008, Lila returned to Maryland, making her residence in Mount Airy, MD to be near her family.
Lila enjoyed spending time with her family. Over the years she had many interests. She loved playing golf, cooking, sewing, crossword puzzles and reading, especially her bible. She was still a great baker at 95 and made a delicious cheesecake and Texas sheet cake, often requested by her grandchildren. She was interested in civics programs, politics, and philanthropic efforts which is not surprising given her background in government and that she was a loving, selfless woman.
She was married in 1943 and moved around with the Navy before settling back in the Washington, D.C area. She had 3 children, Georgia, Bill and Steve, whom she cherished with her whole heart. In 1968 she married Robert Lee whom she shared her life with until his passing. In 1996 Lila met Jack DePew, who would become her companion and partner for the next 20 years.
Lila is survived by her children Georgia (Jim) Thompson, Stephen Bartlett; Grandchildren Jacquie Boyle, Jamie (Trent) Darling, and Jill Pearre; Great-grandchildren Alexandra Boyle, Eric Boyle, Caitlin Darling, James Darling, Ben Shinoski, Kyle Shinoski, Parker Pearre and Lila Pearre. Predeceased by her husband Robert Lee; son John William Bartlett; Granddaughter Jodi Shinoski; Grandson-in-Law Jeff Boyle.
A Celebration of Life will be held on February 22nd, time to be determined. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Wounded Warrior Project in her name.
