Paul William Ruch (known by his grandchildren as “Be”) of Owings Mills, MD, passed away April 2, 2021. He is the son of the late Mary Louise (nee Brady) and Paul G. Ruch.
Paul attended Randallstown Elementary School and Loyola High School before graduating from Catonsville High School in 1950. Immediately after graduation, he worked for the B&O Railroad (now the CSX Corporation) until his retirement on December 31, 1987. During this period, he also delivered papers part-time for News American. For the next decade, he worked at Charles A. Klein & Sons.
A member of the armed forces, Paul joined the Army in 1952 and was stationed in Germany, where he worked as a cryptographer in the Signal Corps. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1955. Immediately after that, he married the love of his life, Elizabeth. They were married at Old Holy Family Church on June 5, 1955. In 1961, they moved into their house on Wards Chapel Road.
Paul served as an altar boy and an eucharistic minister at Holy Family Parish. He volunteered his time as a bingo worker and counted money for the Church for most of his life while assisting at the parish’s annual bazaar. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
He enjoyed vacationing with his family and going for long drives in his beloved red Ford truck or his Ford Taurus. An avid gardener, he could tell you the name of any plant or flower on sight. Handy with carpentry, he built furniture, sheds, a gazebo, a barn and an addition, along with finishing a basement and doing whatever else his family required. He enjoyed his quiet time by his pond, feeding his koi and playing with his dog, Pokey. Wednesday afternoons were spent adventuring through the countryside with his best friend Adrian “Woody” Woodin. He always relished an ice cold Guinness and his collection of old tractors. His hats and talents were many and if he couldn't fix it, he could rig it.
He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth Murphy, (known by her grandchildren as “Nin”) of 65 years; his brother, Charles; his sister-in-law Mary Catherine and brother-in-law Arnie Gries; and predeceased by his youngest brother Robert and his sister- in-law Janet. He is also survived by his five children, Patty and her husband, Mike Klein; Michael Ruch; Debbie and her husband, Barry Cline; Brian Ruch; and Timmy Ruch and his wife Ginny as well as his seventeen grandchildren, Mikie; Patrick and his wife Tiffany; Katie and her husband Leo; Sean and his wife, Maria; Ryan and his wife, Mary; Shannon; Kevin; Brigid; Michael and his girlfriend, Kelsey; Megan and her husband, John; Kerry; Casey and his wife, Kathryn; Kathleen; Paul; Molly; Olivia; and Brandon. He is well-remembered by his fifteen great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Rory, Killian, Declan, Riordan, Maggie, Rosie, Eddie, Ruthie, Annie, Finn, Lucy, Caleb, Aiden, and Emelynn, and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Uncle Bill has been a fixture in our lives - just always at every party, picnic, celebration, holiday gathering, church supper - the list goes on and on, and thinking about him not being with us is heartbreaking. Always there with a smile and a hug, he enjoyed talking to his family and was just somebody you could count on to make you feel loved and cherished. He so appreciated the food you served and the efforts that were made to make a gathering special. He always made me feel special. Although I am sad that he is gone, he will forever be in our hearts and our memories, and he will still always be with us whenever we gather as a family. Love you, Uncle Bill!!
